The breastplate began at the bottom of the neck and extended down past the waist to the knees. From the waist to the knees, it took on the resemblance of a skirt. The breastplate was by far the heaviest piece of equipment that the Roman soldier owned. Depending on the physical stature of the soldier, this piece of equipment could weigh in excess of 40 pounds! In First Samuel 17:5, we are told that Goliath’s breastplate weighed “five thousand shekels of brass” or the equivalent of 125 pounds.

The loinbelt was the most important piece of weaponry the Roman soldier owned because of its importance to the other pieces of armor. The second weapon he wore was a magnificent and beautiful breastplate. It was made out of two large sheets of metal. One piece covered the front of the soldier, and the other piece covered his back. These two sheets of metal were attached at the top of the soldier’s shoulders by large brass rings. Sometimes these metal plates were made up of smaller, scale-like pieces of metal causing the surface of the breastplate to look very similar to the scales of a fish.

All seven pieces of the Roman armor, first was the “loinbelt.” Even though it was the least impressive and most commonplace piece of weaponry that the Roman soldier wore, IT WAS THE CENTRAL PIECE OF ARMOR THAT HELD ALL THE OTHER PARTS TOGETHER. For instance, the loinbelt held the breastplate in place; the shield rested on a clip on one side of the loinbelt, and on the other side was another clip on which the Roman soldier hung his sword when it wasn’t in use.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Church at Ephesus, in verse 11, “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” The phrase “whole armor” refers to a Roman soldier who is fully dressed in his armor from head to toe. Because of Paul’s many imprisonments, this was an easy illustration for him to use. Paul could see the Roman soldier’s loinbelt, huge breastplate, brutal shoes, affixed with spikes, massive, full-length shield, intricate helmet, piercing sword, and long, specially tooled lance that could be thrown tremendous distance to hit the enemy from afar. The Roman soldier of the New Testament times wore all seven pieces of this armor.

Jesus said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.: (Matthew 28:18). He conferred this same authority on the believer and gave him the power of attorney to use His Name. In Hebrews 1, there is a picture of Jesus after He was raised from the dead. Verse 3 says, “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person…..” Seeing Jesus is seeing God. Jesus is the express, absolute image of God. Everything in God is expressed again in Jesus, every likeness and every detail.

Jesus came to earth to reconcile man back to God. He defeated satan in hell, took from him the authority that Adam had given him, and was raised to the right hand of God. Jesus did not sin; He took man’s sin and died the death of a sinner. But He didn’t stay that way. He was raised from the dead. God called Him God and said His throne is forever (Hebrews 1:8) He will never die again. the universe was put into the hands of a born-again, resurrected, glorified man.

It is commonly understood that God has authority and that Jesus has authority. Which is true, but traditional religious thinking has set the authority of Jesus on a high plateau and the authority of the believer on a much lower plateau. In the light of God’s Word, we see that Jesus gave the Body of Christ the same authority He has. Jesus came to the earth and met man on his level. He came to pay Adam’s price for high treason.

In the pits of hell, God spoke words of authority. Hebrews 1 says that God brought the first begotten into the world. He was justified and made alive in the spirit. To justify is to “make righteous,” to “put in right standing with the Father.” We were justified with Him and have been made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. He was raised from the dead. We were raised from the dead. He was the first man ever to be born-again from death to life. Jesus defeated satan, triumphed over him in the cross and regained the authority for mankind.
