In 2nd Timothy 4:7 Paul said “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”  How could he say he had fought a good fight and finished the course if the truth of the matter was he had really failed?  How could he have said, “I have kept the faith” when in this case faith must have failed him?  When the truth of the matter is that, REAL BIBLE FAITH CAN NEVER FAIL!  How could this sickly man (with this terrible eye disease) constantly travel around the world by the hard method of transportation of his day, sometimes working for his own keep, preaching sometimes most of the night, and be in a weakened, sickly condition? IT JUST DOESN’T COMPUTE!

DOES SICKNESS GLORIFY GOD?  Through tradition, false teaching, and lies from the devil, people have been told that their sickness glorifies God, and that God is trying to teach them something.  How can sickness glorify God when He sent His Son to do His will and Jesus went about healing?  To do the will of God is glorifyng to Him.  It is His will to be healed, not to be sick.  If sickness glorifies God we would have to read Paul’s thorn this way: “I will glory in my opthalmia; my eyes may be full of repulsive discharge; I may be the object of pity; not matter, I will glory in it.  I will rejoice in my sickness.”  For those of you who say that God has made you sick to teach you something, let me ask you a question. How long have you been sick, and how long is it going to take you to learn your lesson?  If it was true (and it is not)  that God made you sick to teach you something, then learn what He wants to teach you then get healed.

So, what was Paul’s “thorn?”  One of the first rules of interpretation is to interpret Scripture by Scripture, and keep everything in its context (so you won’t be ‘conned’).  Keeping this in mind, let’s proceed to see what the BIBLE SAYS was Paul’s thorn.  The expression “thorn in the flesh” is not used in either Old or New Testaments except as an illustration.  It is NEVER FOUND in the context of sickness.  Every time it is used it is specifically stated exactly what it is.  The first reference is found in Numbers 33:55: If ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes and THORNS IN YOUR SIDES(emphasis mine) and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.”  Here we are told  that the “pricks” and “thorns” were the PEOPLE of Canaan.  They were personalities…NOT A SICKNESS!  God’s illustration was to show that, as a thorn sticking in the flesh is annoying, so the Canaanites, if left in the land, would be annoyance to the children of Israel.

The next reference is found in Joshua 23:13 where God said, speaking about the nations–people, “…they shall be scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes.”   They were PERSONALITIES—PEOPLE—NOT SOME EYE DISEASE.  Again, another reference is found in 2nd Samuel 23:6 where the “sons of Belial”  were referred to as “thorns.” Paul TELLS US that his “thorn in the flesh” was a PERSONALITY–“the messenger (Grk. Angelos) of satan.” “Angelos is a personal pronoun and is referring to an angel..NOT SICKNESS.  Some have translated this “the angel of the devil,” or “satan’s angel.”

The Greek word “angelos” is used 188 times in the Bible.  It is translated “angel” 181 times and “messenger” 7 times.  In all 188 references it is ALWAYS a “person” and not a “thing.”  To say that in this ONE CASE it means sickness is to do injustice to the scriptures and to our methods of interpretations.  If we did this to every other doctrine we would not have anything solid to stand on.  Both Rotherham and Weymouth’s translations refer to this “angelos” messenger, as a personality…NOT A SICKNESS. Rotherham: “…..that HE might be buffeting me…”   Weymouth: “….As for this, three times I besought the Lord to rid me of HIM.”   Paul then proceeds to tell us what the “messenger of satan” was sent to do:  “BUFFET.”  The word “buffet” means “to give a blow after blow.”  It gives the idea of waves buffeting the sides of a ship.  It is used of Christ when He was on the cross and it is said that He was “buffeted” (Matt. 26:67; Mark 14:65).  Notice that it was people who buffeted Jesus.  Other references where the word “buffet” is used is 1st Corinthians 4:11 and 1 Peter 2:20.  In neither scripture does it refer to sickness.

For those who say that their sickness was given to teach them patience, and that to be buffeted means sickness, let’s take a look at what the WORD OF GOD SAYS: 1 Peter 2:20 “For what glory is it if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently….”  If Paul’s buffeting was a disease, it would have had to have been many diseases or the same disease repeated over and over.  Paul clearly states that it was a SATANIC MESSENGER–a personality–and not a disease.  It was an evil spirit sent from Satan to make trouble for him wherever he went.  Right after Paul was converted, God told Ananias to go lay his hands upon Paul that he might be healed and filled with the Spirit.  Paul was blinded by the bright light that shone round about him on the Damascus road.  There are those who claim Paul had an eye disease saying it was because of this encounter with Christ. Notice, that Paul RECEIVED HIS HEALING when Ananias laid hands on him (Acts 9:17).

Continuing on from the 19th:  Paul received his healing when Ananias laid hands on him.  However, God still said, in Acts 19:6 “I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my names sake.” Paul listed the sufferings several times, and not once mentioned any kind of sickness.  Because of this Paul was able to say: 2nd Corinthians 12:10, “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak then I am strong.”  The Greek word translated here “infirmities” means “weakness.”  Paul realized his weakness and inability in his own strength to stand up against the satanic messenger.

Three times Paul asked God to remove this messenger.  God’s reply was “My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2nd Corinthians 12:9). Paul was asking God to remove this troublemaker.  But God was telling Paul that the GRACE OF GOD THAT PAUL HAD IN HIM WAS ENOUGH FOR PAUL TO BE ABLE TO DO IT!  Look at James 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God, (you) Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”  In other words, God was saying that the power in the resurrection of Jesus Christ working in you can handle anything that the enemy would bring against you!  God has already taken care of the enemy, now it is up to us to keep him off God’s property!
