Exodus 15:26, When Israel crossed the Red Sea and started toward their homeland, the Lord spoke these words to them and revealed Himself as Jehovah-Rapha. Jehovah-Rapha translated is, “I am the Lord thy Physician,” or “I am the Lord that healeth thee.” God didn’t put diseases upon Israel or upon the Egyptians. It is satan, the god of this world, who makes man sick. Jehovah declares that He is the Healer.

Since it was ‘Paul’s thorn in the flesh,’ it would seem logical to me to listen to what Paul said it was: 2 Cor. 2:7, “……………..The messenger of satan to buffet me………” Everywhere that the Apostle Paul went to preach, this evil spirit went before him, behind him and around him stirring up everything it could. So, you may ask why didn’t the great Apostle Paul command the devil to leave the earth? Simple (back to first three chapters of Genesis). The devil has the right to operate here until Adam’s “lease” runs out.

Too many people have taught that “Paul’s thorn in the flesh,” was some kind of sickness or disease sent by God to keep Paul humble. But, I’m going out on a limb here…let’s see what the WORD OF GOD says it was and then get in agreement with that! First of all, a thorn in the flesh is NEVER MENTIONED IN THE WORD AS SICKNESS! We need to let the Word interpret itself. See how the Word uses the term. In the Old Testament, God said to Israel, in effect, “If you don’t kill those Canaanites when you possess the land, they will be THORNS in your side. They will torment you” (Num. 33:55; Joshua 23:13; Judges 2:3.).

There are many Bible scholars agree that the ENTIRE book of Job took place over a nine to eighteen-month period. Afterwards, we see that God TURNED Job’s CAPTIVITY to the devil. Therefore, when Job was SICK, he was in captivity to the devil. When Job was in POVERTY he was in captivity to the devil. But God TURNED Job’s captivity! God gave Job TWICE AS MUCH as he had to begin with. That’s God at work! GOD IS A GOOD GOD!

If we ALLOW satan to attack us and try to steal, kill or destroy God will PERMIT it, because satan is the (small g) god of this world (2 Cor. 4:4) and we are living in his territory. Job himself opened the door to the devil by being afraid, in fact Job was VERY PRACTICED at being afraid. Job 3:25, “For the thing which i greatly feared is come upon me.”

There has been a lot of misunderstandings in the Book of Job. Let me see if I can give you the “Readers Digest,” version of what took place. God did NOT make Job sick, the devil did out of PERMISSION NOT COMMISSION! God will PERMIT you to rob a gas station or steal from somebody but He won’t COMMISSION you to do it. Either we are free-will moral agents or we are not. Study the first three books of the Bible, mankind was put in charge!

Here it is Labor day, the last three day weekend of the summer…BBQ’s, road trips and mini-vacation get aways. May we each take some time to remember what Father God did when He sent Jesus to redeem mankind. For instance when we partake of the Lord’s Table, we do it IN REMEMBRANCE of all that He has done for us in His death, burial and resurrection. May we always day by day REMEMBER what the Lord has done for us.
