So, what was Paul’s “thorn?”  The Word of God CLEARLY tells us.  To say that it was sickness is to insert something into the passage that it does not say.  Some would try to tell us it was God’s way (sickness) of keeping Paul in line.  Paul said VERY PLAINLY WHO WAS THE CAUSE of “the thorn in the flesh”  it was SATAN!  He SAID a “messenger of satan” did it.  He didn’t say God did it.  He put the blame where it belonged.  Let’s look at 2nd Corinthians 12:7 “And lest I should be exalted above measure of the revelations, there was given to me a THORN IN THE FLESH, THE MESSENGER OF SATAN TO BUFFET ME…………”(emphasis mine).  What kind of problems did Paul have? We’ll begin looking at that tomorrow.  If you are a Christian, the world is not going to understand you, they are going to reject you, persecute you, and in a general sense this may not be an easy life.  However, IT CAN BE EASY in the sense that GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN YOU THAN HE THAT IS IN THE WORLD!

Let’s look at Paul’s ministry to find out what kind of problems he had.  Remember, many people will reject you and not understand you if you live the type of life that Christ wants you to live–the crucified life.  So, let’s look at the the Word of God, and see what problems he had. 2nd Corinthians 6:4-10 “But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of rigjhteousness on the right hand and on the left, By honour and dishouour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.”  Paul talked about the problems, the tests, the tribulations, the persecutions, YET NEVER ONCE DID HE MENTION SICKNESS.  If Paul never mentioned sickness, why should we?  LET THE REDEEMED SAY SO! YOU ARE WELL ABLE! JESUS IS LORD!

TONIGHT: 6:30 MEN OF DESTINY…chapter four in the study guide, I have some extras if you don’t have one…looking forward to seeing you tonight, as we “KEEP THE DEVIL OUT OF OUR LIVES!”

Another passage of scripture to support Paul not being sick is 2nd Corinthians 11:21-29 “I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak.  Howbeit, whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly) I am bold also.  Are they Hebrews? so am I.  Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in deaths oft.  Of the Jews five time received I forty stripes save one.  Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils of false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.  Besides those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.  Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?”

It goes right on into the 12th chapter where Paul calls it his “thorn in the flesh.”  Can you see after naming all those things, he never once mentioned sickness as being one of his problems.  Now, I am not so naive as to say that Paul never had a problem with battling sickness.  Maybe he reached the place of divine health that I believe is possible.  I believe I have known of people who have done it, who have walked in divine health, which is God’s most perfect and divine will for our lives.  GOD IS NOT A RESPECTER OF PERSONS! As is YOUR FAITH so be it unto YOU!

Yesterday’s trivia: Ishbosheth, 2nd Samuel 3:8.

Kenneth E. Hagin received healing as a teenager, and lived over SIXTY YEARS in divine health.  I remember him saying one time “that he had a lot of opportunities to be sick, but just didn’t take them.”  The Apostle Paul never once mentioned sickness in 1st Corinthians 4:11-12, “Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling place; And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it”  Paul was persecuted, he had hardships and trials, he had testings, was rejected, beaten, stoned, left for dead, but never once did he mention sickness.

MANY THANKS to Ron Roper as he ministered words of life to us at Jubilee last night. What a BLESSING he is!

Acts 19:11-12 give us some further insight into Paul’s life.  He had an Apostolic calling, and even had a special anointing to minister to the sick.  “And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought into the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.”  The disease that some claim that Paul was supposed to have had was called (I believe) “Opthalmia,”  a disease of the eyes.  This oriental disease was so gruesome that you could hardly stand and talk to someone who had it and look them in the eye.  This sickness caused unspeakable looking pus to run down over the face.  Can you imagine God performing “special miracles” by Paul when he was so horrible looking from his own sickness that people could not stand to look at him?  It states that handkerchiefs and aprons were taken from Paul’s body and laid on the sick and they were healed.

Today, if handkerchiefs were taken from a diseased body like Paul was supposed to have, we would burn them to stop the disease from spreading.

Can you imagine these Ephesians in Acts 19, looking at Paul’s pus-looking face, whom God would not heal as some would tell us, and receiving faith from that to be healed themselves?  Can you imagine the crippled man in Lystra (Acts 14:8-10) looking upon a man with a discharge running down it and receive faith for his own healing?  The Biblical illustrations go on and on concerning the great miracles performed through Paul.  Even the babe in Christ, the natural man, or the biblically ignorant would have to agree that it does not even make sense that “SPECIAL MIRACLES” were wrought by Paul if he were in that condition.  If Paul’s thorn was a sickness then God told him to keep it.  And IF GOD TOLD HIM TO KEEP IT, then this is the only place in the Word of God where God told anyone who came in faith for healing to keep it.

TODAY: 11-3, HARVEST FESTIVAL, games, food, singing and fellowship, invite and bring someone…all ages invited!

In 2nd Timothy 4:7 Paul said “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”  How could he say he had fought a good fight and finished the course if the truth of the matter was he had really failed?  How could he have said, “I have kept the faith” when in this case faith must have failed him?  When the truth of the matter is that, REAL BIBLE FAITH CAN NEVER FAIL!  How could this sickly man (with this terrible eye disease) constantly travel around the world by the hard method of transportation of his day, sometimes working for his own keep, preaching sometimes most of the night, and be in a weakened, sickly condition? IT JUST DOESN’T COMPUTE!

Yesterday’s trivia: Sarah, Genesis 18:11-15.

Today’s trivia: Who did Jesus say shall laugh? Hint: Luke 5-6

DOES SICKNESS GLORIFY GOD?  Through tradition, false teaching, and lies from the devil, people have been told that their sickness glorifies God, and that God is trying to teach them something.  How can sickness glorify God when He sent His Son to do His will and Jesus went about healing?  To do the will of God is glorifyng to Him.  It is His will to be healed, not to be sick.  If sickness glorifies God we would have to read Paul’s thorn this way: “I will glory in my opthalmia; my eyes may be full of repulsive discharge; I may be the object of pity; not matter, I will glory in it.  I will rejoice in my sickness.”  For those of you who say that God has made you sick to teach you something, let me ask you a question. How long have you been sick, and how long is it going to take you to learn your lesson?  If it was true (and it is not)  that God made you sick to teach you something, then learn what He wants to teach you then get healed.

GOD IS ALIVE AND WELL AND MOVING AT JUBILEE!  What a great time we had yesterday, thanks for the atmosphere!

So, what was Paul’s “thorn?”  One of the first rules of interpretation is to interpret Scripture by Scripture, and keep everything in its context (so you won’t be ‘conned’).  Keeping this in mind, let’s proceed to see what the BIBLE SAYS was Paul’s thorn.  The expression “thorn in the flesh” is not used in either Old or New Testaments except as an illustration.  It is NEVER FOUND in the context of sickness.  Every time it is used it is specifically stated exactly what it is.  The first reference is found in Numbers 33:55: If ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes and THORNS IN YOUR SIDES(emphasis mine) and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.”  Here we are told  that the “pricks” and “thorns” were the PEOPLE of Canaan.  They were personalities…NOT A SICKNESS!  God’s illustration was to show that, as a thorn sticking in the flesh is annoying, so the Canaanites, if left in the land, would be annoyance to the children of Israel.
